The dragons indeed appeared to be all but gone. Extinction by disbelief. The last pair of mighty beasts would have to be extremely old -- but if they still existed, were they perhaps breeding? I looked around for signs of a nest. Not knowing what to look for, I wandered aimlessly, looking in trees, in caves, on rock ourcroppings.... and then I saw them.  perched atop a craggy cliff, they craned their necks downward and peered back at me.

Toss a frail moon overhead
Just out of my reach.

To let it slip away
But rather build a tower fair
That pierces the dark sky.
Inside will set a staircase high

A host of master carpenters
And masons strong and swift
I hire to raise this edifice 
That I may grasp my dream.

And let the moon be free.

The upper peninsula of Michigan hides hidden treasure. Glacial melting left moraines, eskers , drumlins and grooves.. There are many small lakes and streams -- not so great as the Great Lakes and the mighty Mississippi -- but each with its own beauty. Duck lake, on the outskirts of Shakey Lakes in the southern part of the peninsula, is a pretty little spot. Lake, forest and camp coexist in harmony here. I am blessed to have access to this small bit of serenity.

Crossing the stream, I could see the sign more clearly. It read :"Here Be Dragons!" but "Be" had been crossed out, and "Were" had been scratched over it into the weather-worn plank. A ponderous sadness fell across my shoulders causing me to droop and sag. Surely not all the dragons had gone. One hearty creature must still terrorize the skies, bellowing flame-filled roars and scorching treetops . Where had they gone? What horrid disaster had befallen these magnificent monsters? I walked deeper into the forest, scanning for the slightest hint as to the fate of the dragons.

Barely conceal her river's pulsing currents.

Waves of the aurora-- her shimmering hair

Cascade down to her broad shouldered mountains.

She is Winter. 
She is Death.
Unforgiving.
